ShockResQ’s Story

At the age of 15, Oluwadamilare Ezra Lawal founded a nonprofit organization called ShockResQ. He shares the story behind the creation of this disaster relief nonprofit organization, as well as his motivation to continue making a positive impact.

“During challenging times, my mom and I leaned on the kindness of others. Their generosity provided us with a car that became an essential part of my childhood, allowing me to attend school and enabling my mom to work. We've since passed that car on to another family in need. The compassion of those who cared deeply is the reason certain gifts and items still grace our home today. Even during the toughest times, when my mom and I relied on the kindness of others, she always found ways to give back. Her selflessness taught me an invaluable lesson to extend a helping hand, regardless of our circumstances. Whether it was donating clothes I had outgrown to Goodwill or contributing to the Salvation Army, she instilled in me the value of helping others.

The teachings of my mom have shaped me into the person I am today, instilling in me the values of compassion and giving back, even during our own struggles. From a young age, she emphasized the importance of lending a helping hand and supporting those in need. Giving back became a fundamental part of my life; whether it was donating money, items, or volunteering our time, we always found ways to contribute to our community.

Reflecting on those who supported us during rough times fills me with gratitude and drive. Their care and compassion, along with the values I was taught, inspire me to give back. I'm driven to extend that same warmth and compassion to families and anyone facing hardships.

Life's unpredictability taught me the importance of preparedness. While challenges may arise unexpectedly, I've learned that there are resources available to help us navigate through them. Instead of dwelling on the uncertainty of what might happen, I've chosen to focus my energy on preparing for potential obstacles. By proactively seeking out solutions and equipping myself and others with the necessary tools, I can face the unknown with confidence and resilience. While the journey may be fraught with challenges, taking proactive measures can significantly ease the path forward.

Recognizing the universal concern for the safety and well-being of those in need, and acknowledging the shared emotions of vulnerability and uncertainty, I founded the nonprofit organization ShockResQ on January 29th, 2024 and officially launched ShockResQ on February 14th, 2024. Our aim is to help communities and individuals enhance their readiness for unforeseen disastrous events. With the goal of instilling the same lessons I was taught as a child and continue to learn today, I aim to demonstrate that by utilizing available resources and strengths, we can equip ourselves for disasters and unexpected tragedies and provide support to those who are already experiencing them.”

Ezra endeavors to extend the same comfort he received as a young child to other children, families, and individuals in need, providing support to those experiencing unexpected shocks or crises in their lives.
